Mayo
Clinic
History
This clinic is named after Dr William Worrall Mayo who
was born in England and emigrated to America in 1846. Mother
Alfred Moes, a nun of the order "Sisters of Saint Francis",
invited Dr Mayo and his two suns, William J and Charles H
Mayo to join with them to build the 27-bed Saint Marys
Hospital in Minnesota. This was opened in 1889.
By 1892 more doctors were joining the Mayos as they
developed a reputation for team work, accurate diagnosis and
treatment. It was only a matter of time before the Mayo's
Clinic became know as the Mayo Clinic.
See the links below for a more detailed history of the
Mayo Clinic.
Locations
The world renound Mayo Clinic has 3 locations in the
United States:
- Rochester,
Minnesota
This is where the Mayo Clinic is based. It consists
of the Mayo Clinic, Saint Marys Hospital and Rochester
Methodist Hospital. They offer a broad range of services
in virtually all medical and surgical specialities.
- Jacksonville,
Florida
The Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is affiliated with
Saint Luke's Hospital where patients who need
hospitalization are admitted.
- Scottsdale, Arizona
Follows the pattern of emphasising the team
approach to solving medical problems in numerous medical
and surgical disciplines.
The Mayo Clinic of South
Africa
Located west of Johannesburg, the Mayo Clinic of
South Africa was founded by Dr Wypke Wypkema in 1974. There
is no reference we could find to say whether or not this is
associated with the Mayo Clinics in the USA so we haven't
provided a link for the moment.
Mayo Private Hospital,
Australia
As far as we can tell this has nothing to do with the
Mayo Clinic. It is an accredited Surgical and Medical
Hospital serving the people of the Manning River District
for 71 years. We only hope that their service is a lot
better than their website! We haven't provided a link here
so that it won't be confused with the Mayo Clinic.
The Mayo Clinic Diet
Myth
This has nothing to do with the Mayo Clinic and you will
find this quote on the Mayo clinic website:
"don't believe any of these diets. They did
not originate at Mayo Clinic and are not approved by Mayo
Clinic."
