Cinco De Mayo
(The Fifth Of May)
Cinco De Mayo is a holiday in Mexico on The Fifth Of May.
It commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French
army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is not Mexico's
Independence Day (this is September 16th)
Although primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla it
is also celebrated in other parts of Mexico and in American
cities with a high mexican population.
Importance
A recent search in Google for "Cinco De Mayo" brought up
250,000 pages. Like many similar festivals round the world
it is often seen as another way of attracting tourists
and/or having a good drinking session and this shouldn't in
any way detract from it's significance in the history of
Mexico.
